During his long and distinguished career, he made seminal observations in hematology that provided a framework for understanding diseases such as porphyria, hemosiderosis, macroglobulinemia, and the monoclonal gammopathies. Jan Waldenström was the grand old man of Swedish internal medicine, internationally known and respected.
